FAQs

Compare Wines/Search Wines

Q. When I am carrying out a comparison or search for a wine, no results are returned.

A. You must allow time for the site to auto fill the drop down below the field box and select the required text before proceeding.

Q. When I carry out a comparison the old search results are returned

A. This is because we cache your results for twenty minutes, this allows time to refine your search. To avoid this happening press the clear button located on step 1 of the compare control panel.

Q. There are hundreds of wines that start with château; must I type this every time I wish to select a name?

A. No. The text recognition software allows you to type any part of the name; for example Château Lafite-Rothschild could be typed as Laf, the search would return the manageable number of wines that have Laf in the title starting with those letters.

Q. I have carried out a search and the Price by Vintage chart only appears to have two dots.

A. That is because this chart shows the price for each wine by vintage. You will have selected a comparison on one vintage and the chart is showing the most recent price for that single vintage.

Q. I have carried out a comparison using All Vintages and I do not understand the chart.

A. See explanation at the bottom of the chart. This chart displays prices by date and not vintage. Therefore, if you have selected all vintages then each year will display the average price for all vintages sold in that year. In the case of such a search it is necessary to switch to the chart, Price by Vintage, this chart will display the most recent price of each vintage.

Q. Once I have carried out a comparison can I refine that search?

A. Yes. You can switch to the simple results tab and tick up to six wines to carry out a refined comparison.

Q. Must I use accents if appropriate?

A. No, the auto fill software will recognise the text without accents.

Q. How do I search for wines from an appellation/region?

A. Go to “Search Wines” tab in the wine tools section, then refine search to the required level.  Before executing the search, ensure that you have selected a vintage that is old enough to have had all the wines released, but young enough to ensure that there is readily available data to have guaranteed inclusion of that vintage. We recommend three to four years old.

Q. I have carried out a search of Bordeaux vs. Burgundy (all vintages) and the results seemed slow in loading.

A. The database of Vinalytics numbers tens of thousands of records, therefore the larger the search, the more records are involved. We use all possible methods to increase search speeds, but recommend that the user either has patience, or refines the searches to specific vintages or smaller searches.

Q. I carried out a search yesterday and it was fast, but today it seemed a lot slower.

A. To enhance the user experience we cache our searches, meaning we save a search in the system for a number of days, or until that area of the database is updated. Therefore, if you are not the first person to carry out that search within the above parameters, the results will be loaded from memory.

Q. Why do the prices not match up to Liv-Ex?

A. Liv-Ex takes the lowest prices from their trading platform, whereas we take the average retail prices of our merchant members. By taking the average prices we are able to negate the effects of wines offered at the extremes of the pricing spectrum that are often offered in very small batches.

Q. I am looking to sell a wine from my cellar and I received an offer from a merchant, but the offer falls well short of the Vinalytics price. Why is this?

A. The Vinalytics price is the average retail price of member merchants therefore an adjustment must be made for the merchant’s profit margin.

Searching the site

Q. How do I find other information on the site, such as news articles?

A. There are various other ways of finding information on the site:-

  • Use the search box at the top right hand side of the home page to search the entire site for any matching words.
  • Use the community search tab
  • Premium users will notice that the final tab for individual wine pages is labelled related info. This tab contains news articles, blogs and forum posts that have been tagged to that wine.

Wine Cellar

Q. I have added a wine to my cellar manually because it is not in the database, will I be able to track the value?

A. Every wine that is added manually is added to a list, which allows us to track which wines need to be added to our database. A decision will then be made based on the following factors:-

  • Popularity amongst users
  • Suitability for inclusion
  • Availability of pricing data

Q. What happens when I remove a wine from my cellar?

A. All information concerning that wine is removed from your cellar. Once the wine is removed, the value of your cellar will drop and if we were to leave any history in place, the growth of your cellar would be erroneous.

Vintage Charts

Q. Why are the vintage charts incomplete?

A. Our vintage chart is generated by compiling average scores of all wines in that region. We therefore only enable the vintage chart for a region when we feel there is a large enough selection of wines from a broad base to give a meaningful return.;

Functionality

Q. Some of the functionality does not seem to work.

A. Vinalytics has been developed to work on all major internet explorers, however as the web site has been developed to incorporate up to the minute features there may be some loss of functionality if you are running very old versions of internet software. A simple search in your search engine will allow you to download the most current version of your preferred internet software. If this fails to remedy the situation then please get in touch with Vinalytics Ltd via email at support@vinalytics.com, stating the nature of the problem. We shall endeavour to resolve the problem as soon as possible.

Q. I am viewing out of date information, why is this?

A. It is possible that your computer is caching (saving images of) pages already viewed. Press Ctrl-F5.

Currencies

Q. When I signed up I selected a currency to view prices in, are the prices shown based purely on information in regions where my chosen currency applies?

A. You can select the region that the prices relate to separately from your chosen currency. For example, you may choose to base your prices based on transaction information in Europe but display this information in US dollars.

Q. Can I change the region or currency that I would like Vinalytics to use after I have signed up?

A. Yes. This can be done at any time by accessing the ‘edit your account’ page after you have logged in.
